Three-Dimensional Printing Applications And Materials Used In This Technology

December 7th, 2009

There are a number of three-dimensional printing applications and materials used in this technology. However, all these fabrication materials have to be thoroughly inspected, developed and distributed. The most popular materials used in rapid prototyping technology nowadays are prototyping plastic, wax, resin, polymer, polyurethane, plaster, etc. The process of material choice is not as simple as it seems. There are a lot of factors influencing this choice established by prototyping designers and engineers. So, there are always several factors determining the choice of material and they must be accurately followed. One of such factors is solidity of a future prototyping model and, consequently, its durability. Secondly, there is a wide range of designs and colors that can be chosen by a client or designers in course of model production. Three-dimensional printers can be divided into two groups. The first group includes inject printers, which use mostly such materials as granular substances, including powders and plasters. The second group consists of fused deposition printers. The principle of their work is a bit different comparing to inject printers. The materials used with fused deposition printers are mostly liquid polymers. Such materials as polymers and resin proved to provide the most durable, solid and flexible rapid prototyping models that can be widely used in aggressive environment. However, modern technologies are developing at exponential rates and rapid prototyping, including its various subtypes such as stereo lithography, selective laser sintering, fused deposition modeling and of course three-dimensional printing – is not an exception here, developing more and more new techniques and providing designers with wide range of new prototyping materials.
So, what do we know about three-dimensional printing? The most widespread definition says that it is a computer-aided technology creating a prototyping model by means of layered technology common for all prototyping techniques. This computer-assisted technology is generally called CAD, or computer-aided design. Completion of prototyping models is the main sphere of 3D printing application. Brand new prototyping technologies appearing lately caused the production of new prototyping materials widely used for prototyping and software and hardware providing the accurate production of prototyping models and machines. The main reason why 3D printing is growing popular nowadays is the effectiveness of this manufacturing. Firstly, the cost price of a prototyping model as well as productions costs of 3D models are much lower comparing to the rest of rapid prototyping techniques. Secondly, no other prototyping technique can provide such high speed of prototype production as three-dimensional printing does. Thirdly, 3D model are more accurate than any other prototyping model, which makes it popular among clients. Materials that can be used with 3D printers are of different solidity and color, which makes a perfect choice for customers and designers to fulfill their vision of future product.

Key Facts About Rapid Prototyping

December 7th, 2009

Every printing technology has its pluses and minuses. A number of materials, offered by different companies and of which prototyping models are made, is really great, ranging from prototyping powder to polymer. As most people think, general advantages that determine the most successful printing technology are fast production of a model, low cost price of an item, large number of design and color options, functionality of the future model and some other important criteria. The following printing technologies are known to be successful and profitable in the market nowadays:
The prototyping technology used in the past was very time-consuming and took up to several months. All models were created manually and required additional carving or any other tooling, which took much time and depended on the skills of prototyping stuff. Of course, such manufacturing was incredibly expensive, requiring much time and personnel to produce a model and make it perfect. It was becoming more and more obvious that such manufacturing had to be redone or at least improved. Then, rapid prototyping technology was invented and established in the USA in 1988. Nowadays this technology includes a number of techniques, such as three-dimensional printing, selective laser sintering, and many others. The second name of rapid prototyping technology is solid freeform fabrication, or SFF.
Let us look through the 3D printing in detail. As it has already been mentioned, 3D printing is a subtype of rapid prototyping technology. The technology used to create a model by means of 3D printing is layered technology. The object is created by putting layers of material, a cross-section by cross-section, which are glued together to form a perfectly shaped model. The first and foremost advantage of 3D printers is their affordability, implying great functionality for the lowest price. Such printers are also easier to use and capable of producing models faster than any other prototyping machine. The system used by three-dimensional printers is pretty much similar to that used in inkjet printers that is why you can create the model of any color you wish. This is a unique function used only by this prototyping technology. 3D prototyping models are perfect when it comes to conceptual stages of any engineering design, because on these stages the solidity and accuracy of a model are minor features. Apart from some other prototyping techniques, toxic chemical materials and substances are not used by three-dimensional printing technology. This feature is also a peculiarity of one more prototyping techniques called stereo lithography. Fast technological progress occurring in rapid prototyping nowadays is going to release one more innovation or new application of three-dimensional printers. Most people will be able to use such machines without leaving home. Supposedly, such printers are going to become a real sensation in the short run.

Basic Things About Rapid Prototyping Technology

December 6th, 2009

When it comes to the creation of a large number of prototyping parts and details made of different materials, the most popular processes used are casting and molding. However, tooling is not very profitable deal, because it requires large investments and adherence to the specifications of the product peculiarities. Rapid prototyping comes in handy here – it not only quickens the entire manufacturing process, but also reduces expenses on production. Let us take injection molds as an example. The usual cost of it ranges from twenty to seventy thousand dollars. The process of injection mold production takes up to a month. Despite this insignificant delay, it is obvious, that injection molds have too many advantages. Among these advantages are the exclusion of tooling and carving from the prototyping process, improvements of a product without post-production expenses and increase of income from product selling. Factors mentioned above are the main reason for usage of rapid prototyping. One more advantage of this technology is possibility to choose the design of a future model. As the rapid prototyping machine is intercommunicated with a computer, a 3D computer program creates the future design. The variety of designs for one and the same object can be sometimes really stunning. However, rapid prototyping process is not that good at times, as it may seem. The costs for production of a model can be quite high, depending on the number of objects produced. The larger is the lot, the cheaper is every produced detail. Comparing to the past times, rapid prototyping underwent a great deal of changes, from manual manufacturing to a machined one. Manual manufacturing had a number of disadvantages and needed certain improvements. The greatest minus was the time needed for manufacturing. The process of model making could take several weeks depending on the complexity of an item. Moreover, after the product was actually finished it required additional tooling, which also took a bit of time. The main achievement of the modern rapid prototyping invented in 1988 was a great economy of time and absence of additional tooling, which made it possible to create models in several days or even hours. Despite high price for rapid prototyping models, rapid manufacturing is very popular and used by such industries as engineering, medicine, architecture, machining, etc. The closest analogue of rapid prototyping is three-dimensional printing. As opposed to rapid prototyping, 3D printers are of much smaller size, which makes it possible to use them not only by large industries, but at home as well. The price of such printers is comparatively low, the most expensive model costs less than 5000 dollars. The functionality of such printers is undeniable, so, who knows, may be each of us will have such machine in the nearest future.

Rapid Prototyping: Three-Dimensional Printers

December 6th, 2009

Comparing to usual home printers we all get used to have, three-dimensional differ greatly, obtaining more and more popularity in the modern world. The main plus of such printers is that they shorten the time needed for production. The main sphere of 3D models usage is product testing in both aggressive and non-aggressive conditions and defining functionality of the future product. Tooling and carving that have been generally used in past times and are generally used in some of modern rapid prototyping technology is of no need when it comes to three-dimensional printing. You can program your personal 3D printer however you want, depending on your needs and preferences. There are a number of custom features that can be implemented in your 3D printer.
The number of design options presented by three-dimensional printers is really unlimited, so the prototyping process becomes even creative with 3D printers. The technology, which is really seemed to be innovative and new nowadays, is rapid prototyping technology that is getting more and more popular each day. Rapid prototyping machines carry out the entire process on the metal surfaces, so that designers have a number of opportunities to fulfill their prototyping ideas, which are not possible to implement by means of other prototyping techniques. The best part here is that three-dimensional printers being a new prototyping tendency continues to develop, presenting more and more perspectives for its users.
Since the beginning, three-dimensional printers have made the prototyping much faster than before and design of the future model can be changed the way we couldn’t even dreamed of before. 3D printers are easy to use and control, being connected to personal computers, they work by pressing a button. The materials used by 3D printers for prototyping process are different, there is a range of mixing variants of materials that can also be used in the process.
The process is similar to the traditional rapid prototyping, which lies in layered building of a prototyping model. The exact copy of the initial or future object can be created by means of 3D printer, using appropriate prototyping materials. Being not time-consuming, this new brand technology helps to create several prototyping models in a short time. The most of the process is automated, requiring a human assistance though.
3D printers must be installed or at least tested by most of companies and corporations, while their functionality and usefulness are undeniable. These printers can be used with different purposes, but one fact is indubitable – these machines are very time-consuming and make it possible to create lost parts and details or required items in a few minutes. The role of such printer for every organization cannot be overestimated. Materials used can be very different and one of the most important achievements of 3D printers is that they can use not only plastic for creation of models, but also such materials as polyurethane, epoxy, polyester and their combinations.

The Most Important Things To Know About Rapid Prototyping Techniques

December 5th, 2009

Technological progress is a process that characterizes modernity. Due to it, we have got all technical appliances we have, all cars we drive and all industries that produce them for us. Printing is one of such industries that have been undergoing this progress during the last twenty years. Finally, printing technologies brought with them modern three-dimensional printing that has become another step of technological progress. What is 3D printing? 3D printing is a subtype of rapid prototyping technology that gains more and more popularity nowadays. We know rapid prototyping technology as a solid freeform fabrication or layered technology as it is called by specialists. Three-dimensional copy of a real object is created in the process of rapid prototyping and the process is implemented by means of layered technology, which lies in the basis of RP process. In other words, three-dimensional printing as well as rapid prototyping is a cross-sectioning of a virtual prototyping model and its further production by means of prototyping machine and real materials, which are grown up layer by layer. The main advantage of 3D printing is its relatively low price, comparing to other rapid prototyping techniques and machines that due to their high price can be used only by large industries. It is doubtful that other additive technologies will be used at home by a wide range of people, whereas three-dimensional printing can be used as any desk jet printer in the nearest future.
Nowadays three dimensional printing is acquiring high popularity in different spheres like clothes, footwear, jewelry and many other spheres requiring a production of small parts, necessary for their products. Such details cannot be produced by other prototyping machines because of the high production costs. That is why 3D printing has been invented and is generally used by a number of industries. The advantages of this new technology were also seen by architecture, medical industry, engineering, etc.
As opposed to other rapid prototyping techniques, three-dimensional printing is a very fast and cheap technology. Rapid prototyping is generally quite time-consuming despite the word ‘rapid’ in its name and can take from several hours to days in weeks, depending in the number of details, their complexity and solidity. The more complicated is the part the more time it requires to produce it, not talking about mixing of materials used for rapid prototyping. In this case 3D printing looks like pretty advantageous and attractive technology that will probably supplant all other rapid prototyping techniques. Apart from the low price of 3D printers.
Finally, one more advantage of 3D printers is that they can be used practically without human assistance, being controlled fully by computers. Comparing to all previous rapid prototyping techniques, that required a large servicing staff, 3D printing is revolutionary technology in this respect and who knows what add-ons to this technology wait for us in the future.

It is a book-like item, having the same size, approximating the reading process to real book maximally. All you need to do to get your book in Kindle is to connect it to your laptop or computer and download a book from your hard-drive or Internet. Immediately after a book is on the device, you can use it. Kindle has a built-in hard drive and removable flash memory card so that it is up to you to choose where to store your downloaded book. As most web sites determine a minimal fee for the books and other files downloaded from their servers, you have to pay sometimes to get the book you need. Kindle has a special deciphering function needed to decipher some books, which are specially protected from unauthorized copying. Together with your Kindle device, you get an opportunity to read thousands of electronic magazines, newspapers and blogs from all over the world.
The first company in the world, which invented the first ink-jet printer, was Hewlett Packard. It also produced a number of desk jet printers that became popular all over the world and which you can meet in every second house. Nowadays the company announced that it slowdowns its facilities and concentrate on the production of printers, because of a sudden slowdown in ink jet printers production. The number of inventions is becoming lower and lower nowadays that is why such concentration has become necessary.
Three-dimensional printing has appeared recently as a new revolutionary technology. Most industries of the world approved the appearance of the technology able to make their production process faster and more efficient. 3D printing technology has much in common with computer-aided design. Moreover, 3D printing is going to be used not only by large industries, but as home printers as well as their price may become quite affordable soon. 3D printers are also dependent on computers and as well as usual prototyping technology, it uses electronic image to produce a 3D model. To get a detail you need, you have to download STL file of this object, press one button and you will get the lost button or whatever else. Your computer will do the rest of the work for you.
Large industries use three-dimensional printing as well as other prototyping technologies in order in order to provide their clients with qualitative models of potentially produced items, which makes it possible to improve all disadvantages of a product and, hence, to reduce possible post-production costs. In this respect 3D technology is unique and doesn’t have a match.

Spin Casting: The Basics

December 2nd, 2009

Rapid prototyping was brought to a new edge of the tooling production effectiveness by a technology called spin casting. New incredible options were offered to those, who use rapid prototyping by a spin casting that helps to create molds from different types of materials especially metals. Whereas models created by means of spin casting can be very fragile sometimes, parts of real objects can be produced by means of rapid prototyping instead. The term, which is generally defined for the creation of prototyping model can be shortened much with the help of spin casting, so that the model of a product used for testing can be produced in several hours. Spin casting has even more advantages – if a model is created using this technology, it requires no additional tooling or carving, which considerably reduces postproduction expenses. Spin casting technology helps to take into consideration all requirement of a client to specifications and features of a model.
Another subtype of spin casting technology called metal spin casting makes it possible to combine and to use different types of metals in order to get more functional, solid model, done according to all specifications of a standard prototyping model. The functionality of metal spin casting model is undeniable. However the process of spin casting has its own peculiarities among which is usage of special rubber molds in the process of model production. According to peculiarities of rubber mold, a new metal model is created with adherence to manufacturing techniques. Zinc alloys are generally used in the process of spin casting modeling, as they make it possible to use any metal for creation of the outer layer of a model. Any possible metal, for example, steel, aluminum and copper can be replaced by zinc alloys. Different spheres and technologies can use spin casting models. Among them is electroplating.
Of course, there is a wide range of materials that can be used in spin casting, not only metals or metal alloys. Such materials are epoxy, polyurethane, casting wax and casting polyester. Mixing of materials is generally accepted in spin casting technology. Comparing to other rapid prototyping techniques, spin casting is considered to be the most effective and reliable technology, having a number of advantages. One of such pluses of spin casting production is reduced production costs of the technology. The number of items that can be produced with the help of spin casting is unlimited. Other prototyping technologies are quite expensive when it comes to the production of a small number of models, whereas spin casting and metal spin casting can be used for production of a great number of prototyping models, but for a lower price. So, as it has already been mentioned spin casting is not only a time consuming technology, but it also helps to reduce costs on production of prototyping model.

Rapid Prototyping Techniques

December 2nd, 2009

Modern technological progress makes designing and creation of products much faster that it has been twenty years ago. Due to the constant competition on the world market, manufacturers from all over the world do everything possible to release their products in the market as soon as possible. It cannot be denied that such situation makes rapid prototyping technology very useful. Previously the process of rapid prototyping production took much time, while prototypes were mostly created manually with all needed carving and tooling. Thus, prototyping process took up to several weeks.
There a number of ways to create an object from different parts, but still, the essence of rapid prototyping process remains the same – you have to take a rapid prototyping machine, a computer with preinstalled 3D graphical program and create a model from layers glued together. One of the first rapid prototyping techniques is stereo lithography or STL. A special laser beam hardens a prototyping material in the process of model production. The material used can be different, but stereo lithography usually uses resin. Small details are being produced layer by layer in the course of STL technology. This rapid prototyping proved to be one of the most popular ones. One more RP technique is called LOm or laminated object manufacture. Materials used by these techniques are paper or wood. Prototyping machine carves thin layers from these materials and glue them together as well as it is done in other rapid prototyping techniques. One more RP sub technology is called selective laser sintering and the process of prototyping, being implemented with the help of laser beam, is very much similar to STL technology. The list of rapid prototyping techniques, applied depending on the peculiarities of prototyping process, is endless, including FDM or fused deposition modeling and many others techniques differing mostly in materials used. Fused deposition modeling is a melting of a certain prototyping material and layered building of prototyping models.
3D modeling is a technology that helps you create prototyping model very fast and in different colors, but the solidity of material is not as high as in other prototyping techniques. Specialist are convinced that taking into consideration the speed of prototyping development, three-dimensional printing will soon be affordable to all people around the globe not only for industrial usage, but at home as well. It will give you an opportunity to produce a lost button or fastener if you have lost one in a few minutes. The predicted price of such devise is under 5000 dollars, which gives an opportunity to buy it for home usage. Companies producing such inexpensive machines will not only supply their products but also will install it and provide all necessary service, so that you won’t have to bother yourself with search of a good master if needed.

Rapid Prototyping Machines

December 1st, 2009

American media have recently announced, that despite all argues around this question, some American company is going to release a great innovation – three-dimensional printer that can be used at home or in offices in order to product 3D model, like parts and details of any real object or mechanism. Incredible thing here is that this prototyping machine is going to cost less than 5000 dollars, the price affordable for most people, who need such apparatus.
The manufacturers from all corners of the globe were impatient to see this innovation release, but they were truly disappointed when despite some money taken as deposit for such 3D machine, the machine itself has not been supplied yet. The actual truth is that those manufacturers, who were going to supply affordable prototyping machines or at least promised to, may not live long in a severe market environment and taking into account constant competition between leading companies. Rapid prototyping is not an exception in this case.
Probably those initials difficulties can be solved soon, but the bad thing here is that they can harm those executives who have given away their money for something that does not exist and may not be produced in the nearest future.
However, not all firms and enterprises waist their breath, some of them proved to be reliable ones. One of such companies is the American company Objet Geometries LTD. This company proved to supply high-precision prototyping machines in time, the quality of these machines is undeniable as well.
3D printers offered by Objet geometries present accurate performance, the models coming out of company’s machines are of high quality and can hardly be compared to any other 3D printer. The company constantly improves its technology, producing the best three-dimensional machines to their customers and offering the best prices.
Many enterprises producing rapid prototyping machines offer their products in lower prices. In practice, these cheap prototyping machines are not as good as they are told to be. The surfaces of such items are rougher and the quality of part coming from such machines is often poor, while details are fragile and breakable. As it is known, the main property of prototyping models is their solidity, that is why fragility is a great disadvantage of cheap rapid prototyping 3D machines.
The reasons, mentioned above, urge great corporations all over the world, including countries of the third world, to buy more expensive and reliable rapid prototyping machines, produced by known companies, which are ready to bear responsibility for sold item, to support and to service it beginning from installation and in the process of machine exploitation. Such machines produced by eminent companies provide the most accurate, reliable and solid copies of real objects.

The Advantages Of Rapid Prototyping Technology Application

December 1st, 2009

Nowadays one of the most enhanced methods of model production is called rapid prototyping technology or RP, as it is usually called by prototyping specialists. The process is implemented by a prototyping machine and takes a short time usually. The whole project of rapid prototyping model production can take from several hours to several days and sometimes weeks, depending on the complexity of a model and its nuances. Rapid prototyping technology has several more names, generally used in the sphere of prototyping engineering. Among such names are layered technology, three-dimensional printing, solid freeform fabrication (SFF) and CAD (computer-aided design) technology.
The advantages of rapid prototyping technology application are:
• Communication rise and visualization of a model.
• Verifying and testing design and functionality of a model.
• Lesser time for production of a model
• Sooner release of a model in the market
• Improvement of all model’s disadvantages in the process of model production and avoiding of dangerous mistakes in the course of production that can be revealed after product release and, hence, can cost a pretty penny to producers.
Rapid prototyping is also very important for production of so called short run components, which can be created without using carving and tooling. Rapid manufacturing is the second name of rapid prototyping technology in this case.
The process of rapid prototyping is assisted by a computer, which gave the technology another name – CAD, or computer-aided design. The method which is the basis of rapid prototyping technology is called additive technique due to the peculiarities of the process, where material is built layer by layer. The materials used in rapid prototyping can be different. The most popular are prototyping wax and plastic, different powders and liquids, resin, metal and non-metal powders and materials. The material are usually put up by a special tank, called nozzle. In order to achieve a high solidity of material mixing of different material can be used in rapid prototyping.
To understand what rapid prototyping is we need to look through the process thoroughly.
The first step is the creation of virtual prototyping model by means of computer-aided design. The 3D program presents an image, programmed as STL file automatically. A prototyping machine and a computer are intercommunicated in the process of RP.
The second step is creation of segments called cross-sections. These segments are created by a computer program and can be read by a prototyping machine.
Finally, the third step is the actual creation of the model, which is layered growing of material. Prototyping machine uses cross-sections presented by a computer to build accurate layers of the material. Depending on the prototyping technology, layers of material are glued together to get the solid and accurate prototyping model.

Great Pluses Of Rapid Prototyping Technology

December 1st, 2009

Since the beginning of rapid prototyping era, a lot of companies and enterprises have get interested in the new technology and many companies provided the development of rapid prototyping business and offered its services. Previously, companies of these type were called bureaus and they let all comers an opportunity to use the services of a new technology that was very expensive and unverified. Firstly, such bureaus offered to users all pluses of RP technology without possible risks and expenses, frightening customers. The reason of this fear was the relatively young age of the technology, which is why it was hard for users to rely on it. File conversions were firstly fulfilled by prototyping service bureaus in order to decrease the difference between two-dimensional and three-dimensional CAD models. It helped those big enterprises that still did not come to solid freeform fabrication modeling to benefit greatly.
Rapid prototyping technology has been undergoing great changes during the last twenty years and prototyping service bureaus changed a lot as well, promising to provide more services apart from ownership risk and reduction of costs. Nowadays there are only several corporations in the world, whose services you can use, if you are interested in rapid prototyping technology.
Rapid prototyping technology has a lot advantages, among which are the following. You can control the development of your product, which in its turn helps to make your product faster and to make it competitive comparing to other products of the same orientation. The goals of clients and designers and prototyping goals can be easily achieved by using rapid prototyping. Any idea or image of the future product can be implemented with the help of RP services. The rapid prototyping process is not just the creation of prototyping model, it is the whole process of developing this or that product beginning from the idea or image and ending in actual creation of the physical object. The rapid prototyping technology economizes not only your time, but also your money. The constant feedback between customer and creators let make all needed changes in the process of product development, not after it. Comparing to the past times when prototyping modeling was carried out manually, modern rapid prototyping is really rapid, because needed model, which is going to be exactly similar to one that you are going to produce in the future, can be created in a few hours. Some people say that the word ‘rapid’ is just a part of the name because in practice rapid prototyping can take weeks because of the repeated production of models, considering all improvements and changing of a mode. However, despite all small disadvantages RP technology is a unique invention that must not be underestimated.

Prototyping Technologies

December 1st, 2009

Rapid prototyping technology can be applied in different spheres, especially when it comes to various types of engineering, product development or any other form-shaping application. The most widespread spheres of application of rapid prototyping technology are different types of testing including ergonomic and functional testing, test fitting and product design and even for tooling of products produced in a very small number.
As rapid prototyping is developing, more and more new RP technologies are appearing, such as STL, SLS and FDM, which are deciphered as stereo lithography, selective laser printing and fused deposition modeling. Other widely used names for rapid prototyping are solid freeform fabrication or SFF and three-dimensional printing. Of course, all of these technologies have their pluses and minuses.
The company, invented and patented the fused deposition modeling technology is called Stratasys. This company also reserves all rights for FDM technology. Fused deposition modeling is based on the layered technology as well as all rapid prototyping technologies. The material is being grown during the process. It gave the technology its name, widely known today. The materials used for this process can vary, but most popular and plastic (if we talk about FDM technology) and metal. Plastic or metal wires are melted and material comes to nozzles, which put the layers of a future model. The wires must be heated or else the process cannot be done. Motion path of nozzles can be both horizontal and vertical and is controlled automatically. Software used for the controlling of the process was specially created by rapid prototyping specialists. After another layer is put to a prototyping model within prototyping process, it hardens, providing the perfect basis for the next level.
The stereo lithography technology differs from the fused deposition modeling. First of all the material used for a prototyping process is called resin and it is polymer that hardens under the influence of ultraviolet light. Special laser beam is directed to every layer of liquid material on order to harden it and to create the basis for the following layer.
SLS is also based on the layered technology, but materials, used for it differ from other RP technologies. Among them are mostly powders that are built up using cross-sectioning technique. The SLS machine interconnected with a computer. Machine scans the cross-sections of a future model presented by a special computer program, controlling SLS prototyping process.
3D printing is based on the layered technology as well, but the process itself is simplified, while the layers of material are glued together. This technology is much cheaper comparing to other prototyping technologies, which means that it can be sold to a wide number of customers, who want to have their own prototyping machine.
All in all, all prototyping technologies are unique and give a wide range of opportunities not only to big enterprises, but for all comers.
