The Development And Current Usage Of Dr. DivX

February 26th, 2010

A codec is a compressor, a software program that recodes a video file into a new file which takes up much fewer megabytes. Compression is important because it allows more efficient internet transfer of files, and additional advantages, such as, for example, the posting of longer videos on You Tube.

One popular form of codec is DivX, a brand name of various products created by DivX, which includes the DivX codec, which is popular because it is able to retain high visual resolution and quality in the videos which it compresses. There are actually two DivX codecs, the regular MOEG-4 Part 2 DivX codec and the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC DivX Plus HD codec.

The DivX grew to its current form through a series of daring if not somewhat shadowy events in the annals of computer hacking and vicissitudes which included the rise and fall of personal fortunes, partnerships, and software ownership and development. Throughout all this history, the DivX codec took form, developed and grew to greater and greater levels of sophistication.

The original DivX codec was hacked from Microsoft by French hacker Jerome Rota, after he discovered Microsoft wouldn’t play his video portfolio. Later the codec was altered to permit “container” files such as AVI, which is frequently used by modern digital cameras and also cell phone video recorders.

In 2000 Jordan Greenhall recruited Roda to form a partnership to develop an MPEG4 codec from scratch that would retain its Window Player compatibility. The project was known as the open DivX codec. During that time an employee named “Sparky” developed an improved form of the codec known as “encore2″

In the summer of 2001 Roda left the French Rivierra and moved to San Diego where he and Greenhall created DivX2. The encore2 was improved and released as the DivX codec 4, in 2001and the DivX 5 was released in 2002. DivX 5.2.1 was released in 2004, at which point the technology was considered complete, and further modifications focused on speed and wider hardware support.

The DivX has an added an optional media container format. What this means is that it has the capability of storing multiple subtitles, multiple audio tracks, multiple video streams, etc. along with the primary encoded video footage.

One of the popular DivX products is the Dr. DivX codec. This codec is is easy to use, quick and has compatibility with many video formats. The program comes in a free non-commercial form or a trial version, which is quick to download and easy to use. Dr. DivX features a three step compression system. Step 1 is downloading of the video file to the software. Step 2is choosing the compression settings. Step 3 is making the compression. A fully compressed and ready to use file is prepared in seconds, and as a plus, the DivX format is very You Tube friendly.
